Proxy vs VPN: what each one does, and which you need

Proxy vs VPN: a proxy relays one app's requests, a VPN encrypts a whole device's traffic. A comparison table, and which to use for scraping or public Wi-Fi.

The difference between a proxy and a VPN: a proxy relays the requests of one app or script through another IP address, while a VPN encrypts all of a device's traffic and sends it through a single server. For scraping and automation, use a proxy. For protecting your laptop on public Wi-Fi, use a VPN. They overlap less than the marketing suggests.

We sell proxies and no VPN, so read this with that in mind. The aim is to help you pick the right tool, including when that tool is not ours.

Proxy vs VPN at a glance

Proxy VPN
What it covers The apps, scripts or requests you point at it Everything the device sends
Where you set it up A URL in your code, or a field in an app's settings An app or system profile that adds a network interface
Encryption it adds None on the hop to the proxy; https pages stay encrypted end to end Encrypts all traffic between the device and the VPN server
Exit IPs One per request, or many in parallel Usually one at a time for the whole device
Where the IPs sit Datacenter, ISP or home connections, depending on the product Mostly the VPN company's own servers
Built for Scraping, automation, testing from other locations Privacy on untrusted networks, reaching a private network

What a proxy does at the network level

A proxy is a server that makes requests on your behalf. You tell a program to send its traffic to HOST:PORT, and the proxy forwards it to the site. The site sees the proxy's exit IP.

With an HTTP proxy, which ProxyPanda serves alongside SOCKS5, two things happen depending on the site:

  • For an http:// site, your client sends the whole request to the proxy in plain text, and the proxy fetches the page. The proxy can read and change anything in it.
  • For an https:// site, your client sends a CONNECT request naming the host, the proxy opens a connection to it, and your client then speaks TLS directly to the site through that CONNECT tunnel. The proxy sees the hostname and the number of bytes. It cannot read the page.

A proxy is per app. Setting one in a Python script changes nothing for your browser, your mail client or your operating system's updates:

curl -s https://api.ipify.org; echo
curl -s -x http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT https://api.ipify.org; echo

The first line prints your own address. The second prints the proxy's exit IP. Both ran on the same machine at the same moment. HOST, PORT, USERNAME and PASSWORD are placeholders; the dashboard shows your real values on the service's page. ProxyPanda also serves SOCKS5, which carries any TCP connection; HTTP vs SOCKS5 covers when to use it.

What a VPN does at the network level

A VPN client creates a virtual network interface on your device and tells the operating system to route traffic through it. Everything that leaves the device, from every app, is wrapped in an encrypted tunnel to the VPN server. The server unwraps it and sends it on to the internet from its own IP.

Two consequences follow. Anyone between you and the VPN server, such as the café Wi-Fi operator, sees only encrypted traffic to one server. And past the VPN server, your traffic is as exposed as it would be without a VPN: an http:// page is still plain text on the rest of its journey. The VPN protects the first stretch, which on public Wi-Fi is the stretch you worry about.

Is a proxy the same as a VPN? Is a proxy encrypted?

No, and this is where people get caught out.

An HTTP proxy adds no encryption of its own. Your https:// traffic is still encrypted, because TLS runs from your client to the site through the tunnel. But the hop from you to the proxy carries some things in the clear:

  • the hostname of each site you connect to, in the CONNECT line;
  • your proxy username and password, in a Proxy-Authorization header that is base64-encoded, which is not encryption;
  • the full contents of any http:// request and response.

On your own home or office network, that is usually fine. On an untrusted network, anyone watching could read the hostnames and your proxy credentials. If you run proxied jobs from a laptop in a café, run them over a VPN or from a server.

One more trap: a script that disables certificate checks, such as verify=False in Python requests, gives up the protection that makes https safe through any proxy. Leave verification on.

Proxy or VPN for scraping?

A proxy, for three reasons.

Parallelism. A scraper wants many requests at once, often from different IPs. A proxy gives you that per request. A VPN gives the whole machine one exit at a time.

Rotation and choice. With proxies you can rotate through a residential pool on each request, hold a sticky session for a login, or rent static IPs in chosen countries. What is a residential proxy explains the pool, and ISP or datacenter covers static IPs.

Isolation. A proxy affects only the script. Your browser, your chat and your updates keep using your own connection, which is what you want when the scraper's IP gets rate-limited.

Consumer VPN exit IPs sit in datacenters and are shared by many users at once, so sites that screen out automated traffic often treat them the same way. For a handful of page views a VPN will do. For a job that runs every hour, it is the wrong shape. See the web scraping use case for how people set these jobs up.

Proxy or VPN for public Wi-Fi?

A VPN. The risk on public Wi-Fi is the local network: someone on it watching or tampering with your traffic. A VPN encrypts everything from the device, including apps you forgot were online. A proxy configured in one program protects nothing else, and as covered above, it does not encrypt the hop to itself.

Proxy or VPN for geo checks?

Either can show you a site as it appears from another country. The difference is control.

If you are testing your own site, checking that ads show correctly in a market, or comparing localised prices on public pages, a proxy lets you script it: one request from Germany, one from Japan, side by side. On ProxyPanda, choose the country, region and city on ISP or datacenter IPs when you order. Our residential line has no country choice, so it is not the tool for a check that depends on location. The geo checks use case and the location pages go into the setup.

We do not sell a VPN, and proxies are not a way to watch a streaming service's catalogue from another region. That is outside what we support.

Can you use a proxy and a VPN together?

Yes. With a VPN running on your laptop, a proxied script's traffic goes through the VPN tunnel to the proxy, then from the proxy to the site. The site sees the proxy's exit IP; the café network sees only VPN traffic. You pay for it in latency, since every request takes two detours. On a server in a datacenter, you usually do not need the VPN layer.

Quick answers

Does ProxyPanda sell a VPN? No. We sell residential, ISP and datacenter proxies.

Is a proxy safer than a VPN? They protect different things. A VPN protects your device's traffic on the local network. A proxy changes the IP a site sees for the requests you send through it.

Will a VPN work for web scraping? For a few pages, often yes. For regular jobs at volume, a VPN's single shared exit gets rate-limited, and you cannot rotate per request.

Is a residential proxy a VPN? No. It relays chosen requests through home connections. It does not encrypt your device's traffic and does not cover other apps.

Are free proxies a cheap VPN alternative? No. They carry the risks of an unencrypted hop plus an operator you know nothing about. Free proxies vs paid goes through what can go wrong.

Next step

If the job is scraping, automation or checking pages from other locations, a proxy is the tool. Start with the cheapest line that works on your target, test it on a small top-up, and read the rates on the pricing page. Questions about your setup are welcome in Discord, before or after you buy.
