Why people want an IP in Japan
Japanese sites often restrict or change content for overseas visitors. Some shops do not sell abroad at all, some show a limited international page, and prices and point rewards can differ from what a visitor in Japan sees.
Search is split between Google and Yahoo! JAPAN, which uses Google’s results with its own layout and services around them. Checking rankings or ads for Japanese queries means looking from inside Japan.

Residential has no country choice. It rotates across the whole pool, so use it where the exit country does not matter.
Practical tips
- Set ja-JP as the language and a Japan time zone. Several sites switch to an English or overseas layout when either is missing.
- Older Japanese sites may use Shift_JIS or EUC-JP. Read the declared encoding before parsing, or the text comes out garbled.
- Point rewards shown next to prices on Rakuten change what a shopper effectively pays. Capture them with the price if you compare shops.
