Tribler proxy settings: which downloads use your proxy, and which never do

Tribler proxy settings apply only to plain downloads with zero hops; anonymous downloads use Tribler's own network. How to set SOCKS5 and when you can skip it.

Tribler proxy settings are under Settings > Connection, in a section called "Torrent proxy settings". Choose "Socks5 with authentication" and enter the server, port, username and password. Know one thing before you start: Tribler's source applies that proxy only to plain downloads with zero hops. Its anonymous downloads travel through Tribler's own relay network and never touch your proxy.

So the straight answer for many Tribler users is that a proxy from us adds nothing to what they use Tribler for.

Two kinds of download, and only one uses your proxy

Tribler is a research client with Tor-like anonymity built in. When you start a download, you choose how many hops it takes through other Tribler users, and the interface is honest about the trade-off: "Low speed / High anonymity".

Tribler's source, at the v8.4.3 tag, shows how your own proxy fits:

  • Zero hops: the download is a plain BitTorrent download, and Tribler hands your proxy settings to its engine, libtorrent. Peer connections go through the proxy.
  • One to three hops: the download goes to Tribler's own local SOCKS5 endpoints and on into its relay network. Your proxy settings are not applied.

In code, the rule is a single line: the proxy is set only if hops == 0. The current release is 8.4.3, from June 2026.

Do you need a proxy with Tribler at all?

If you use Tribler for its anonymous downloads, no: our proxy would not be in the path. If you use it for plain downloads of lawful material, such as distribution images, research datasets or Creative Commons collections, you may not need one either; those are fine to fetch from your own connection, and an HTTP mirror, where one exists, costs nothing on a metered proxy.

A proxy is useful for zero-hop downloads when you want that traffic to leave from a separate, stable address, for example on a research machine you would rather keep out of a public swarm. It is not a cover for sharing what you have no right to share. That is not allowed on ProxyPanda, and our acceptable use policy leaves staying within the law to you. For lawful zero-hop downloads, peer-to-peer traffic is fine on our residential proxies and on dedicated ISP or datacenter IPs with no traffic cap.

One more naming trap: Tribler's interface also mentions "Encrypted anonymous seeding using proxies". Those proxies are other Tribler users relaying traffic, not a proxy you buy.

Setting the proxy for plain downloads

The labels below are from Tribler's settings page in its source.

  1. Open Settings > Connection and find "Torrent proxy settings".
  2. Choose a type. The list has "None", "Socks4", "Socks5", "Socks5 with authentication", "HTTP" and "HTTP with authentication". With ProxyPanda, pick "Socks5 with authentication", or plain "Socks5" if your address is on our IP allowlist.
  3. Fill in Server and Port from your service page, and Username and Password for the authenticated type. On ISP and datacenter proxies, switch the proxy to SOCKS5 in the dashboard first; the port can change.
  4. Save, then start the download with zero hops.

What the proxy carries, and what it cannot

For zero-hop downloads, Tribler behaves like other libtorrent clients:

  • Peers go through the proxy. Tribler's source sets peer proxying on.
  • UDP will not come through us. libtorrent can relay DHT, UDP trackers and uTP over SOCKS5, but we have not verified a UDP relay on our gateways, so treat our SOCKS5 as TCP only. Expect those UDP features not to work through us. With an HTTP or SOCKS4 type, libtorrent's source shows they are refused rather than sent around the proxy. HTTP vs SOCKS5 explains the protocol side.
  • No incoming connections. libtorrent's settings reference says a proxied session "will not accept incoming TCP connections".
  • No encryption from us. A proxy relays connections. Tribler's own encryption belongs to its anonymous mode, which, as above, does not use your proxy.
  • Both directions of traffic. Downloading and seeding both cross the proxy. How each direction counts on your plan is written under metering.

Check the meter, and which downloads touch it

The meter makes Tribler's split visible.

  1. Confirm the proxy answers from the same machine: curl -s -x socks5h://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT https://api.ipify.org should print an address that is not yours.
  2. Note the traffic figure for the service in the dashboard (where to find it).
  3. Run one small zero-hop download, and note what Tribler reports as transferred.
  4. Wait a few minutes, since figures update regularly rather than live, and compare.

The dashboard should move by about Tribler's figure. Run an anonymous download afterwards and it should not move at all. If it does, tell us in Discord; that would be worth understanding. How to check your proxy provider's meter covers the method in more detail.

Quick answers

Does Tribler use my proxy for anonymous downloads? No. Its source applies your proxy only to downloads with zero hops.

Which proxy type should I choose in Tribler? "Socks5 with authentication" with your login, or "Socks5" with the IP allowlist.

Is Tribler on Android? We could not confirm it. Its release files include Windows, macOS and Linux builds, and an .apk file that looks like a Linux package rather than an Android app.

Is a proxy more private than Tribler's anonymous mode? No. A proxy changes the address peers see for one hop and encrypts nothing.

Next step

If you are weighing Tribler's relays, a VPN and a proxy against each other, proxy vs VPN is the plain comparison, and which torrent clients work with SOCKS5 shows how other clients handle a proxy. Questions are welcome in Discord.
